So I just finished an article in the May 28th edition of The New York Times Magazine called “The Wrath of Grapes”.
Again – let me re-emphasize – I’m not qualified to weigh in as a so-called “expert” on anything related to the production of what we eat and drink, but c’mon, you have to pause and smirk – just a little – after reading an article like this one. Especially if you’re willing to lump yourself into my self-described category of the seeming “know-nothings”, (those with no industry training/experience). Uh, right, but wait – I do happen to have to eat various foodstuffs and drink various liquids with some degree of regularity, (ah, the tyranny of the human condition), hence my rationalization about why I’m entitled to my opinion. …and my rant!
OK, so some dude fills a void as a wine critic decades ago, and now another dude, (who incidentally happens to actually *make* wine), has a differing point of view? What’s so intractable about that? Sure, I’m biased – we’re all entitled to hold, and even express, our opinions, albeit with varying degrees of civility, hence my skepticism about this apparent philosophical divide amongst the oenophiles engaged in this verbal tit-for-tat. I’m not going to debate the chemistry, (sorry folks, it’s all about the chemistry), but isn’t it entirely possible both of these distinguished characters have a point?
The sun is about to set, (ah, a clue as to where I might – or might not – be located), so I’m going to go sit out on the patio and enjoy a glass of wine. Question – will it be a so-called “fruit bomb” or something a tad more restrained? Hmmmm…
